Mirror Mirror On the Wall

Released towards the end of 1988/beginning of '89, today's rap is the unusual style and beats of the trio known as De La Soul. The song hit #1 on the R&B charts and is largely regarded as the group's signature song to this day. The humorous video features the trio stuck in Prof DefBeat's class on how to be a stereotypical rapper. Cool song, funny video, here are the three fellows from Long Island (Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (P.A. Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three, Baby Huey) known as De La Soul with "Me, Myself, and I"...

80's Television

With the new NFL season right around the corner, and the ending of one of the best series ever on television - "Friday Night Lights," it got me to thinking about other great football television series. Unfortunately, once you get past the likable comedy "Coach," there's not much else for you out there. There was, however, an HBO series that ran for seven seasons and starred everyone's favorite double murderer, O.J. Simpson as "T.D. Parker." The series also featured Delta Burke, former porn star Shannon Tweed, Chris Meloni for 11 episodes ("Law and Order SVU" fame), and Ogre from "Revenge of the Nerds" fame (he shall always be "Ogre.")

the intro from season 5...

Years Gone By, I'd Say We've Kicked Some...

Well, it's our final installment here in The Excellent 80's of our "Motley Crue Mondays" where we've featured the rock and roll icons every Monday through the month of August. Both songs today are featured on the "Dr. Feelgood" album and we start off with a song that cracked the top 30 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Released in 1989, here is the Crue with a song Nikki Sixx wrote after being revived from a drug overdose with two shots of adrenaline to the heart - "Kickstart My Heart"...

Loved the title of this next song, and thought it was a solid effort from the Crue from their Dr. Feelgood album. I remember blaring this cassette single (remember those?) from the stereo of my '84 Camaro in the summer of 1990. From the 1989 album though, here is "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)"...

Since You Been Gone

You know when you hear a song and you think to yourself 'who is this singing this song'? Then, you find out, and you're like 'no way! That doesn't sound anything like them!' Well, that's what I have for you all today. I remember this rather bland ballad from 1989 called "Second Chance." It was a top ten hit climbing all the way to #6, and was the group's highest charting single ever, but most people remember the band for their hits "Hold On Loosely," and "Caught Up in You."
One of the main reasons it doesn't sound like them is because this is the first album with new vocalist and keyboardist Max Carl. The video is black and white and is boring... just like the song. I prefer early 80's 38 Special to this late 80's hit (is that Travis Tritt on guitar? #sarcasm) called "Second Chance"...

You'll Feel the Fire, but Don't Get Burned By the Flame

Get your 80's dancing shoes on today! From 1987 to 1990, Taylor Dayne had a nice run. She had eight songs that cracked the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at #12 or better during those three years. Here's one of those eight hits with the video that features a cool dog, some pigeons, a young married couple, an old fat man in his undies, and lots and lots of the very attractive then 27 year old Taylor Dayne with a wind machine in tow. From 1989, here is "With Every Beat of My Heart"...

Stop Before You Start Fallin'

Today's unimaginative video is an underrated 80's ballad in my opinion. The song barely cracked the top 20, but in my opinion should have been a top 10 hit. It's Steve Perry, post Journey, once again with the follow up hit to "Oh Sherrie." From 1984, here is the boring video to an underrated 80's hit - "Foolish Heart"...

80's Television

Today's sitcom premiered in 1987 and lasted three seasons, and that was probably three seasons too long if you ask me. I saw a few episodes of this ridiculous sitcom and might have laughed once or twice, but I have never found Paul Reiser or Greg Evigan particularly funny either by themselves or as a team when they joined forces for this NBC sitcom which also featured Dick Butkus and Giovanni Ribisi called "My Two Dads"...

Tonight's the Night We'll Make History

Dressed like a member of a barbershop quartet, Dennis DeYoung sings lead on maybe my favorite Styx song of all time. The slow build up leading to the up tempo portion of the song at about the 1:15 mark is my favorite part of the song. Plus, it's just a bonus to get to see Tommy Shaw's hideous 80's hair and his green jump suit at about that point in the video as well. I actually had this vinyl album back in the day too. Here is the band Styx with "The Best of Times"...

R.I.P. Jani Lane

I had The Excellent 80's on cruise control last week as I do from time to time, so this is the first time I've gotten to address the untimely passing of Warrant lead singer Jani Lane who was 47 at the time of his death Thursday.

Warrant was never one of my favorite hair metal bands, but they did have their moments especially the rock ballad "Heaven," which is hopefully where Lane has ended up. The band from Hollywood came onto the scene kind of late in the game in 1989, and rocked on into the early 90's when grunge and rap put an end to the hair metal era pretty much.

Here is the aforementioned ballad that went all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts back in 1989. It's "Heaven"...

Lyrics | Warrant lyrics - Heaven lyrics

So, here is my favorite Warrant video. From 1990, it's a typically silly hair metal band video, and there's no guessing as to the meaning of the song. Featuring the late Jani Lane on vocals along with the hot blond model Bobbie Brown shakin' it for the band and for all of us teenage boys during that time, here is "Cherry Pie"...

She's Got an Alligator Bag

OK, so this Crue song was released in 1990, but the album came out in 1989 so it's still part of the 80's in my opinion! It's another "Motley Crue Monday" kicking off first with this song and video from the "Dr. Feelgood" album (I love Tommy Lee's mechanical drums hovering over the crowd), here is "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)"...

You Should've Been Gone

Though he's been featured in The Excellent 80's many times, it's always been as part of the supergroup Journey. Never have I featured any of Steve Perry's solo hits during the 80's until today. Ok, so Perry never had a lot of solo hits, but today's feature did rise up the charts all the way to #3 back in 1984, and yeah, I had the 45 single of it. Still love this song. I Need an Easy Friend

Formed in 1987 during the grunge scene in Washington, today's trio is best known for helping to usher in a new era of music that all but destroyed the glam metal bands of the 80's. Led by a poetic yet disturbed front man named Kurt Cobain, the band Nirvana released their first album in 1989 which featured today's song that was re-released in 1992 and was a popular song for the group. I've Been Wasting My Time

I like that the first line to today's song is "I've been wasting my time," because sometimes it feels like that to me as I post video after video day after day. But, this is almost borderline obsession for me, but something that I will have to give up someday. But for now as I was looking through some metal hits from the 80's, it lead me to this good little song that maybe never got its full due back in 1983. The band was called Zebra and the song was "Tell Me What You Want"... love the skin tight zebra outfit and the mannequin head... I doubt the video cost more than 100 bucks to shoot...

There's A Joke Here Somewhere, and it's on Me

This 12 minute video outtakes of Bruce Springsteen dancing to his hit song "Dancing in the Dark" have made the rounds on the viral airwaves recently. I didn't watch the whole 12 minutes. I think the first four minutes, heck, maybe the first four seconds are enough to get the idea that Bruce's dancing was a little lacking back in the day. On the plus side, the big man, the late Clarence Clemons struts his stuff during the sax solo at the end of the song...

Let's keep the Burt Reynolds theme going with the movie weekends what do you say? From Smokey to the Cannonball Run to teaming up with Dolly Parton for a movie that I didn't really understand what the title meant back in 1982. Mom, what's a whorehouse? It's Not My Imagination

After posting that interview between Mark Goodman and Missing Persons a couple of days ago it got me to do a little digging into the Missing Persons catalog, and I decided on posting this song from the group from 1984 called "Surrender Your Heart." Here is the American new wave pop rock band that formed in L.A. in 1980 with their video that is probably pretty cool if your tripping on acid. The video kind of reminds me of the old PC screen savers from the mid to late 90's. Here is "Surrender Your Heart"...

MTV VJ's Part 2

Continuing with our MTV original VJ's theme from yesterday, here is Nina Blackwood and a MTV interview with Bond... James Bond... or Roger Moore if you prefer...

Of course last but not least, here is the late JJ Jackson from a 1983 MTV special called "The Unmasking of Kiss"... I like how Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons pretty much dominate the conversation leaving the Kiss "outsiders" like Vinnie Vincent and Eric Carr with little or nothing to offer other than Vinnie's sweet red jacket...

80's Television

In 1984 a sitcom made it's appearance and had everyone asking the same question - who's the boss? No, really, who is the boss? It was pretty evident to me that it was Angela, because she paid him. Now that that is settled, we can take a look back to a show that lasted eight glorious seasons. We literally got to grow up with a young baseball fan and smokin' hot girl by the name of Alyssa Milano who was only 11 or 12 when the series started. Featuring Tony Danza, Judith Light, and the kid no one wanted to watch, Danny Pintauro. Oh, and I did like the sassy mom played by Katherine Helmond. Here is "Who's the Boss?"

Now Listen Up

She's razor sharp! Welcome to the month of August. I don't know where you are in the world, but here in the southwest/midwest of the U.S. the temperatures have been super hot. I think it's about 178 degrees outside right now... shortly after midnight here... it's hot. So, today I'm bringing you a hot video with some fire and some campy outfits, and some sweet props from a video by the band Motley Crue. Since it is Monday, I'm declaring today a "Motley Crue Monday" here at The Excellent 80's, and for the rest of August I'll be bringing you a double shot from some of the best from the Crue during their 80's heyday every Monday this month.

First up, one of my personal favorites from them... written by bassist Nikki Sixx, she's got the "Looks That Kill"...
