They're Out To Get You

As has become tradition here in The Excellent 80's over the years, Halloween brings us another look at the best song/video ever created for the holliday... of course, I am speaking of the late Michael Jackson and the masterpiece that cost about $1,000,000 and is largely considered the most successful music video ever... here is "Thriller"...

Did I See You Drinking A Pina Colada at Trader Vic's?

OK, so today's Halloween song ventures outside of the 80's, but not by much... it's my favorite Werewolf song and hopefully yours as well... it's the scary Warren Zevon from 1978 with "Werewolves of London"...

Ray Parker Jr. - The Other Woman

Don't try and tell me that American Werewolf in London was Michael Jackson's inspiration when it came to the Thriller video... I believe it was this song and video instead... you've got a dancing Frankenstein, werewolf, and mummy, some sort of Uncle Fester character playing the saxophone, a spooky graveyard, and Ray Parker Jr. as Dracula with his hit song "The Other Woman"...

Today's video is scary... I'm just warning you ahead of time... if you can't deal with flying cows, crazy half man - half unicorns, and the scary looks of lead singer Ian McCulloch then you should just turn away right now... for the rest of you that like to be scared and enjoy this Halloween time of year, feel free to check out today's video by Echo and the Bunnymen - "Bring On the Dancing Horses"...

One of Canada's finest rock bands... is that saying very much really? Regardless, Loverboy rocked thousands upon thousands back in the 80's including today's blast which was produced by legend Robert "Mutt" Lange... admit it, when this song came out, and the video with all the hot girls popped up, you were "Lovin' Every Minute of It"

You Make Me, Make Me, Make Me

As we creep up on Halloween, I always think of The Cure as being a somewhat fitting band for this holiday... so for today, enjoy the undeniably quirky, and totally unique band The Cure with a video not choreographed by Paula Abdul, but nonetheless works very well for them... from 1987, here is "Why Can't I Be You?"...

They Put a Parking Lot on a Piece of Land

Back in the day, before this fancy dancy Guitar Hero nonsense all the kiddies are playing now, if you wanted to play a fake guitar, you either played air guitar or a tennis racket like this nerdy kid does in today's video... and we liked it! we loved it! Today's English group has a long and storied past dating back to the 60's when they formed... they produced hits like "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," and my personal favorite, "Lola"... making a splash into the top 10 back in 1983 with a song that I couldn't understand the lyrics to, here are The Kinks with "Come Dancing"...

Get Away, Get Away (And Bust Out Your Dancing Shoes!)

After 1985's dance club hits "Point of No Return" and "Exposed to Love," the three original members of the group Expose' all left and were replaced prior to this 1987 top 10 hit by the new Expose'... I never realized this, because all I wanted to do was dance to a funky groove, and Expose' provided that at times throughout the mid to late 80's... here is the three new members (sweet dance moves and sweet 80's hair styles included!) making up Expose' with "Come Go With Me"...

I Heard a Song Reminded Me of Long Ago

I still love today's song/video... it's an Eddie Money classic that makes you reflect back on the past for a few moments as Eddie's singing his song... if you've never been here or noticed, you can see the counting clock at the bottom showing you how long it has been since the 80's ended, and who of us that grew up during the 80's, if even for a moment or two, would not have wanted to change something or do something differently... time to reflect back to a cherished memory or two for a few minutes with today's video by Eddie Money - "I Wanna Go Back"...

Guess It's Better To Say

I think today's song was under appreciated back in 1982 only reaching #65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart... considered a minor hit by the band Scandal I think this song was never celebrated for what it was - a bouncy, classic kiss-off song that would have easily gone top 10 if sung by The Go Go's... lead singer Patty Smyth's dance moves in the video are very Go-Go's like and the song is classic early 80's... here is "Goodbye To You"...

There are a few songs from the soundtrack which date back to the 70's like Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" and The New York Dolls "Looking for a Kiss"... the movie also includes the 80's hit from the Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun" which isn't on the soundtrack unfortunately... there are actually 41 different songs throughout the movie but you would have to individually download them all if you wanted to compile the full list... today's song is also a very cool non-80's song from a very cool non-80's group called The Velvet Underground... there's not really any video so to speak, but from 1969, with Lou Reed on vocals, here is "Pale Blue Eyes"... hope you enjoyed the week!

No Respect, No Respect

Once upon a time the legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield (God rest his soul) produced a rap song and a genius video to go along with it... on the 5th anniversary of Rodney's death, let's take a moment today to remember and enjoy the genius that was "Rappin' Rodney"... no respect!

I tell ya I'm alright now
But last week I was in rough shape
But I don't get a break with nuthin'

I played hide and seek when I was three
(no respect, no respect)
Why they couldn't even look for me
(no respect, no respect)
I was an ugly kid I never had fun
(no respect, no respect)
They put me through a dog showand I won!
(no respect, no respect)
When I was born I brought no joy
(no respect, no respect)
My old man said he wanted a boy
(no respect, no respect)
I was an ugly kid always alone
(no respect, no respect)
Halloween I had to trick or treat over the phone
(no respect, no respect)
Friends don't call
My phone don't ring
I don't get a break with anything!
(whatsamatta rodney?)
Ah death, where is my sting?!

CHORUS:
It's just Rappin' Rodney
Ain't that your type
No, no
Rappin' Rodney
Get out of sight
It's just
Rappin' Rodney
Make no mistake
Or old
Rappin' Rodney
Can't get a break!

I'm getting old it's hard to face
(no respect, no respect)
Well during sex I lose my place
(no respect, no respect)
Steak and sex my favorite pair
(no respect, no respect)
I have 'em both the same way...very rare
(no respect, no respect)
I know I'm old I could go any minute
(no respect, no respect)
I got a kidney shaped pool with a stone in it
(no respect, no respect)
Doctor Vinnie Boombah that's another one
(no respect, no respect)
I said I wanted to stop aging he gave me a gun
(no respect, no respect)
I told him I got water on the knee
He gave me a sponge and raised his fee
(whatsamatter rodney?)
Ahhhh, It ain't easy bein' me

(CHORUS)

Ah, give me a break
Play somethin' from the forties

Now what kind of music is this?
And how 'bout stardust?

Hey what are you doin'?
That's not stardust!

Listen to this will ya?!
I mean where are the flutes?

What a band...
Hey, don't quit your day jobs!

Look at this!
The drummer carries the melody

Hey tell the bass player
I like his instrument

Hey boys, keep it goin'
Lay it on me
I'm in the groove!

Nothin' goes right I just can't fight it
(no respect, no respect)
Well Eastern Airlines thanked me for flying United
(no respect, no respect)
I got some money what did I do?
(no respect, no respect)
I bought some quicksand the deal fell through
(no respect, no respect)
My car broke down I called Triple A
(no respect, no respect)
They left the car and towed me away
(no respect, no respect)
I can't take it no more I'm getting too old
(no respect, no respect)
I called suicide prevention they put me on hold
(no respect, no respect)
Winter, Summer, Spring, and Fall
I'm always up against the wall
(whatsamatta rodney?)
Ahhh, I don't get no respect at all

(CHORUS)

It's getting worse
It's caving in
The happiness I can't take it no more
It's all over
Hey, where are my kids?
Somebody help me
Hey bartender!
Hey! Who's that guy with my daughter?
Where's my wallet?
How do I get out of here?
Stop that dancin'!
