Michael Jackson and His Duets

Michael's success was primarily solo though you can attribute some of his hits to duets, most notably with ex-Beatle Paul McCartney. The duo of Sir Paul and Michael hit it big with the 1982 single "The Girl is Mine" which peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was the first single released from the "Thriller" album in 1982... a year later (even though this song was recorded before "The Girl is Mine"), the duo followed up for this single which appeared on Paul McCartney's album "Pipes of Peace"... from 1983, and featuring sister LaToya, here is "Say, Say, Say"...

Here is Michael's 1995 duet with sister Janet, who at the time was putting out more hits than her older brother... written, composed, and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, "Scream"/"Childhood" would become the first single in the 37 year history of Billboard to debut at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked... they both seem very angry in this video...

And, of course, who can forget the forgettable duet with Eddie Murphy in 1992 - the corny graphics and a video that should be an 80's video, but somehow slipped into the 90's, here is "Whatzupwitu"

More MJ

The pop star's sudden death is probably the biggest death since Princess Diana and before that John Lennon and Elvis Presley... I've just decided that a week long tribute to the man that changed pop music forever was the least I could do in The Excellent 80's, so enjoy some more of Michael's famous videos and songs... here is another #1 hit from the "Bad" album featuring Billy Idol's former guitarist Steve Stevens and (if you believe the never-wrong wiki-pedia, the woman in the video whose face you never see is supposedly that of Sheryl Crow who actually did tour with MJ as a backup singer for him on his "Bad" world tour - it's "Dirty Diana"...

The third single from the "Bad" album also hit #1 on the singles chart and featured some complicated dancing by the king of pop as he shuffles along the street trying to woo the girl... here is MJ with "The Way You Make Me Feel"...

The 8th single off of his "Bad" album was "Leave Me Alone", directed by Jim Blashfield. It won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video at the Grammy Awards of 1990... though never one of my favorite songs or videos, it definitely represents a constant quest Michael had throughout his lifetime as he tried to balance peace and privacy with his larger than life icon status...

The King of Pop Forever

I'm bypassing the usual 80's movie weekend to continue posting more stuff from Michael Jackson's incredible career...

the man could dance as shown here at the 25th anniversary of Motown where MJ breaks out the single white glove and the moonwalk...

Remember the full length "Bad" video with Wesley Snipes and directed by Martin Scorsese? I haven't seen the whole thing probably since it came out, so I had forgotten a lot of it like most of the whole intro and the moonwalking roller skater... You ain't bad! You ain't nothin'! You ain't nothin'! The second of five #1 singles from the "Bad" album here is the title track "Bad"...

Mississippi in the Middle of a Dry Spell

The high waisted jeans today's artist sports under some cool black chaps really dates the fashion for sure, but one thing's for certain, there is plenty of black leather in this song from this female... here's the Canadian chick rocker with her raspy voice and her #1 single - "Black Velvet" if you please...

I've Been Watching You For Days Now Baby

Well, we just featured this band's only top 10 hit yesterday, so I thought I'd follow it up with their other minor hit from the same album... it's another video with sexy chicks walking around all scantily clad and Kim Wilson sporting a different beret on his head... lots of sexy chicks help offset the fact that this is one ugly band - check out "Wrap It Up" by The Fabulous Thunderbirds...

You Turn Me On, You Lift Me Up

Whoever decided it was a good idea to shoot music videos in nature should never work again... look, I appreciate a good sunset or a view from a mountain, but in music videos it pretty much equals boredom... this band never quite duplicated the success they had with "Don't You (Forget About Me)", but this song was also a hit for them despite the boring video and the creepy drummer staring right at me as he beats his skins... here is Simple Minds with "Alive and Kicking"...

You Without Me Like Cornflakes Without the Milk!

Today's artist born in 1959 in Houston, Texas has one of my favorite one-hit wonder songs released in 1986... his acting is terrible in this video, but his rant against his cheating girlfriend is classic... enjoy Mr. Oran "Juice" Jones with "The Rain"... today, it's Oran's world and you're just a squirrel trying to get a nut!

Lyrics:

I saw you (and him)
walking in the rain
You were holding hands
and I'll never be the same.

Tossing and turning another sleepless night
The rain crashes against my window pane
Jumped into my car didn't drive too far
That moment I knew I would never be the same.

Chorus

Chorus

Now here you are begging to me
To give our love another try
Girl I love you and I always will
But darling right now I've got to say goodbye 'Cause

Chorus

Chorus

(I saw you)
Hey hey baby how ya doin' come on in here
(Walking in the rain)
Got some hot chocolate on the stove waiting for you
Listen first things first let me hang up the coat
(You were holding hands and I'll)
Yeah how was your day today
Did you miss me
(Never be the same)
You did? Yeah? I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today
(I saw you)
That's right now close your mouth
'Cause you cold busted
(Walking in the rain)
Now just sit down here, sit down here
I'm so upset with you I don't know what to do
(You were holding hands and I'll)
You know my first impulse was to run up on you
And do a Rambo
(Never be the same)
I was about to jam you and flat blast both of you
But I didn't wanna mess up
this thirt-seven hundred dollar lynx coat
So instead I chilled -- That's right chilled
I called up the bank and took out every dime.
Than I cancelled all your credit cards...
I stuck you up for every piece of jewelery
I ever bought you!
Don't go lookin' in that closet
'cause everything you came here with
is packed up and waiting for you in the guest room.
What were you thinking?
You don't mess with the Juice!
I gave you silk suits, gucci handbags and blue diamonds.
I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce!
But now I can't give you nothing but advice.
Cause you're still young, yeah, you're young.
And you're gonna find somebody like me one of these days
Until then, you know what you gotta do?
You gotta get on outta here
with that alley-cat-coat-wearing,
punch-bucket-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with.
Cause youdismissed!
That's right, Silly rabbit,
tricks are made for kids, don't you know that.
You without me is like corn flakes without the milk!
This is my world.
You're just a squirrel trying to get a nut!
Now get on outta here.
Scat! Don't touch that coat...
