I've always said that things go better with rock, and these guys just back that up. In fact, they tell you that in this song. And for every minute I have to work, I need a minute of play. Brilliant! This 80's futuristic video comes screaming in at #50 in my only personal countdown of the Excellent 80's top 80 80's videos of all-time. Is it just me or is the bass player sporting a visor? Well, maybe he just got off the golf course. Anyway, it's the one-hit wonder band known as Autograph.

Today's video has it all - a bad boy band sequestered behind a chain link fence, some greasers strutting their stuff, some big crazy hair and mustaches, and a hot chick swinging her pony tail around in a red dress. The band hadn't quite converted their 70's look to the 80's when this song bounded up the charts peaking at #2 in 1982. It's my favorite song from the band that bears the same name as a poor little dog in a famous movie. It's Toto!

Today's video coming in at #53 is the first single I had ever heard from the soulful voice of one Mr. Billy Ocean. It's a #1 hit from 1984 featuring a video where Billy explodes into a puff of smoke - magic! He was in search of a good time just running his game, and love was the furthest thing from his mind, yet, he falls for a queen. Not any queen mind you, but a caribbean one. His dance moves in this video are very Temptations-like if I do say so.

Coming in at #54 on my countdown today is one of the most controversial and successful songs of the 80's from the weird band known as Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Making it all the way to #1 in the UK and to the top 10 in the U.S., the original video was shot in a gay S&M club of some sort and it was subsequently banned in the UK and by MTV. So, this much gentler video emerged in 1984.

If I told you I went to a party last Saturday night, I didn't get laid, I got in a fight you would immediately know what I was talking about wouldn't you? It ain't no big thing, but back in 1988 when Lita Ford was practically fornicating with her guitar in this video, I couldn't take my eyes off of her. In her tight leather and rocking the guitar, she was a school boy's dream and delivered with today's #55 video/song on my Excellent 80's Top 80 Countdown.

Peaking at #10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, it was Madonna's first top 10 hit from her debut album. It's a cool mid-tempo song about a inter-racial relationship between Madonna and her video Hispanic boyfriend. My video/song coming in today at #57 features a quirky band with some quirky lyrics, and a quirky video. I just said "quirky" three times in one sentence. Impressive. Notice the crazy silver shades that Holly Knight sports in one of the scenes... very Kayne-like from 2009 don't you think? Her partner in crime in this silly little video is Michael Des Barres and together they go go through some serious wardrobe changes in the form of the duo known as Animotion.

The crazy cage, the "futuristic" feel of the video, and the receding hairline of frontman Klaus Meine equal one great song and one great video on The Excellent 80's Top 80 Countdown today. The fog machine was in full effect in 1984 for this heavy metal classic from the heavy metal greats from Germany known as the Scorpions.

My favorite white person/black person combo in the 80's was, no, not Michael Jackson himself. It wasn't the Jackson / Paul McCartney combo or even the Stevie Wonder / Paul McCartney combo. It happens to be a dorky white guy named Phil and a cool English brother named Philip, and it happened in 1985 with a song that went all the way to #1 in the UK and #2 in the U.S. The crazy thing is the dorky white guy named Phil has had the wildly successful career, while the cool brother named Philip has been hard to find through the years.

OK, this is going to seem like a weird video to have in my top 80 countdown, but consider for a moment that I grew up in a gym playing basketball for many many hours. When I would go off to basketball camp, they would blare this song at least 5 or 6 times a day, and I loved every minute of it, every time. This song also helped propel into the world of rap in the 80's. Plus, this video is so hopelessly bad with its' 7 foot goals and West Side Story like choreography, it only makes it that much more appealing. If that makes any sense at all.

Today's video on our countdown has great drums, great keyboards, and reminds you that the "new" lead singer of Van Halen can shred a little bit on the guitar himself. After the band got rid of Dave, I dreaded whomever was going to step into his egomaniacal shoes. But, being honest here, the album 5150 remains my favorite Van Halen studio album ever. Maybe 1986 was just the right time in my life to accept such a lead singer change for one of the world's greatest rock band ever. I don't know. I could probably have 10 Van Halen videos in my countdown, but I won't. Here is one of my favorites and one of their best Sammy-led power ballads.

In 1987, whenever this video came on, I watched it really just to see the piano explode at the beginning of the video and for any shots of Nancy Wilson showing some cleavage in those hot bustiers that she would wear in the videos. Seriously though, when you watch this video there is the one shot of Nancy riding a horse. What did that add to the video? I guarantee you the director wanted a shot of her bouncing bosom, and I for one thank him for it. I always felt bad that Ann had to always be in the dark or wearing a long trench coat or whatever to cover up her weight problem, but I tell you, she was looking good in this video as well.

Back in March, I featured the purple one all month long in a tribute to his greatness. 1982 was my first introduction to the small one who would grow to be a legend. I still love this song to this day even though when I originally heard it at the age of 11 I thought the song was really about a red corvette. As I learned getting older, Prince only sings about sex, and this is just another example of his lyrics that ooze sex.

Exit Bobby B, enter Johnny G. One of my favorite r&b groups ever. Yes, I even liked them back in their pre-puberty days when they sounded like girls. So what. This is probably my favorite New Edition song today that comes in at #66. It shows the boys slightly more grown up than from their "Cool It Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man" days rehearsing for a concert. Aside from the hair and the clothes, you wouldn't even know today's video was from the 80's. The quick still shots, the hand-held shots, the different angles, the mix of color and black and white really makes for a pretty good video from a band that seemed to disappear as quickly as this song came onto the scene. Actually, it appears they have survived over the years with various lineups, but this is the only song I know from them and would recognize to this day. The British band is called Scritti Politti and the song at #68 today is "Perfect Way."

I can't tell you how many times I wished I could walk beside a 10 foot high chain link fence with women hanging from it and leaning on against it to watch me strut by. But, it never happened and probably never will. Now, if I were born Anna Mae Bullock, I would have already been able to check that off my list. Who, you say? You know her by her legs and crazy 80's hair and by the name of Tina Turner and watch as she dispenses advice like a therapist to some ruffians on the streets when she asks the age old question - "What's Love Got to do With It?"

Do you like parties? We can invite all of our friends and serve soda and pie. Back in 1987, the world was introducing to three young hellions known as Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock that put together a little album called Licensed to Ill and broke through big time with today's little video that probably cost $200 to make.
Sure this song was way overplayed back in the day and is supposed to be a parody on other party songs, and is even despised by the group themselves. Nevertheless, it remains an 80's staple and showed the world that yes, white guys can rap... and have wicked cream pie fights too.

Wow, did I ever hate today's artists' biggest hit which was "Everybody Have Fun Tonight." This song, which wasn't quite as popular has always been my favorite, and the video is deliciously bad. Why are all the couples frozen at the beginning of the video? Is that to build up the anticipation? Is there anything more awkward than having to watch a drummer play the drums standing up? Who the hell thought up the disco ball hatching into some sort of disco ball chick? And are those legs going to catch up to Jack Hues and beat him down or something? So many questions, so little answers. Here is the band Wang Chung at #72.

Somewhere in South America... Today's video is so helplessly lost in the 80's it's beautiful. The clothes, the styles, the cars, the over exposure to cigarettes. This is my favorite non-Eagles Glenn Frey song and video today coming in at #76. When Glenn was going through his "Miami Vice" phase in the 80's he put out this fairly successful song. I love the little man breaking it down at the beginning and at the end of the video. Plus, there's some seriously awesome football action towards the end of the video too. And, I can't forget to mention the white boy doing the worm frontwards and backwards at the end! Plus, if it's good enough for Kevin Bacon and Chris Penn in Footloose, then it's good enough for me! Today's video and song are in my top 80 just because of the last minute of this video. So many great lines to choose from. What were you thinking about!? You don't mess with "The Juice!" No, it's not O.J. Simpson, but instead it's O.J. Jones. Even the name warrants a spot in my top 80. It's Oran "Juice" Jones with "The Rain." "The Rain"
by Oran "Juice" Jones

I saw you and him walking in the rain
You were holding hands and I'll never be the same

Tossing and turning another sleepless night
The rain crashes against my window pane
Jumped into my car didn't drive too far
That moment I knew I would never be the same

I saw you and him walking in the rain
You were holding hands and I'll never be the same
I saw you and him walking in the rain
You were holding hands and I'll never be the same

Now here you are begging to me
To give our love another try
Girl I love you and I always will
But darling right now I've got to say goodbye

'Cause I saw you and him walking in the rain
You were holding hands and I'll never be the same
I saw you and him walking in the rain
You were holding hands and I'll never be the same

Hey hey, baby how ya doin' come on in here
Got some hot chocolate on the stove waiting for you
Listen first things first let me hang up the coat

Yeah, how was your day today, did you miss me?
You did, I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today

That's right now close your mouth
'Cause you cold busted
Now just sit down here, sit down here

I'm so upset with you I don't know what to do
You know my first impulse was to run up on you
And do a Rambo

I was about to jam you and flat blast both of you
But I didn't wanna mess up this thirty-seven hundred dollar lynx coat
So instead I chilled, that's right

Chilled I went up the bank and took out every dime
Than I wouldn't cancelled all those credit cards, yeah
All your charged accounts, yeah

I stuck you up for every piece of jewelery I ever bought you
Yeah, that's right everything, everything
[Incomprehensible]

Don't go lookin' in that closet 'cause everything you came here with
Is packed up and waiting for you in the guest room, that's right
What was you thinking about, ah?
What're you trying to prove, ah?

You don't mess with the juice
I gave you silk suits, Gucci handbags, blue diamonds
I gave you things you couldn't even pronounce

Now I cant give you nothing but advice
'Cause you're still young, that's right you're still young
I hope you learnt a valuable lesson from all this, you know
Go find somebody like me one of these days

Until then, you know what you gotta do?
You gotta get on outta here with that alley cat coat wearing
Punch bucket shoe wearing crumb cake I saw you with
'Cause you dismissed, that's right

Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don't you know that
You without me is like corn flakes without the milk
This is my world you're just a squirrel trying to get a nut
Now get on outta here, don't touch that coat

The Countdown Begins #80

The Excellent 80's is exactly 80 days away from its' 3rd birthday. Oh, how the time has flown since I began this little blog back in 2007. I've posted hundreds of music, television, and movie clips covering the best in music, tv shows, cartoons, sports, commercials, and movies. I've often been asked what my favorite songs/videos of the 80's are. While that's nearly an impossible question to answer, I am going to try to put together my favorite 80 songs/videos from the 1980's and count them down right here everyday for the next 80 days with the #1 song/video of the 80's brought to you on The Excellent 80's 3rd birthday on July 21st.

You'll find many popular songs of the 80's that make up this list, but there will be the occasional song/video that might not quite fit, but that's the beauty of running your own blog - I can be my own judge. Feel free to agree, disagree, or care not at all. Whatever the case, I hope you have been finding some enjoyment with this little blog and I hope you enjoy the countdown...

We kick off the countdown with a tie at #80. First up is this creepy little video featuring one of the most recognizable songs of the 80's. It's the group Soft Cell with their 1981 hit "Tainted Love." I know that the little girl in this video could kick Marc Almond's ass pretty easily, and I so enjoy the brother giving the "whooaaa" to the song.

Tied at #80 is a slow jam from a blind dude playing guitar. This guy was awesome (passing away in March of 2008 he jammed with the likes of BB King, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, and Stevie Ray Vaughn), and so is this song that was released in June of 1989 and peaked at #5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. You know you slow danced with your girl or guy to this at your school dance and sung right along with Jeff.
