I Was Tired of My Lady. We'd Been Together Too Long

There's just so much to love about today's live version of a 1980 hit by an unknown named Rupert Holmes. Whether it's Rupert's beard, the over-exuberant guitar player, or the bass player with the sweet white man's afro, it's hard not to keep watching regardless of how corny the song is. Released in late 1979, it was the last number one hit of the 70's and the second #1 hit of 1980 (KC and the Sunshine Band interrupted Rupert for a week at the beginning of 1980). Check out Rupert Holmes with a song about starting an affair only to find out that affair you were starting ends up being with your wife... that's just weird... here is "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)"...

MTV Basement Tapes

Remember The Blases, Spot the Dog, Lopez Beatles, or Bombay? No? Don't worry, because unless you watched the MTV Basement Tapes competition then you probably never heard or saw any of these bands. Hosted by MTV's Martha Quinn with help from her co-host, a young Billy Crystal, the fifth installment of the MTV Basement Tapes winner in this 1985 clip was...

Sweet Potato Pie and I Shut My Mouth

As you know from time to time I dip into the 80's country sector. Music videos weren't as common in the early to mid 80's as they were for pop performers, but towards the end of the decade country musicians started putting together some videos especially with the incarnation of Country Music Television in 1983 and particularly as its viewership spread. In 1989, Alabama, which dominated the 80's, had four country number ones from its album "Southern Star." Here is one such song and video. It's the black and white to color video of the song about the poor southern man's struggle during The Great Depression. Here is Alabama with "Song of the South"...

I Don't Know If I Can Face the Night

It's the second highest charting single ever for the super group Aerosmith today in The Excellent 80's. Off their wildly popular "Permanent Vacation" album, here is the video featuring Steven Tyler wearing a trench coat and hat and chasing around a bunch of creepy ghosts while singing "Angel"... I'm alone Yeah, I don't know if I can face the night I'm in tears and the cryin' that I do is for you I want your love - Let's break the walls between us Don't make it tough - I'll put away my pride Enough's enough I've suffered and I've seen the light [Chorus:] Baby You're my angel Come and save me tonight You're my angel Come and make it all right Don't know what I'm gonna do About this feeling inside Yes it's true - Loneliness took me for a ride Without your love - I'm nothing but a begger Without your love - a dog without a bone What can I do I'm sleeping in this bed alone [Chorus] Come and save me tonight You're the reason I live You're the reason I die You're the reason I give When I break down and cry Don't need no reason why Baby , Baby [Chorus] You're my angel Come and save me tonight you're my angel Come and take me allright Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight, Come and save me tonight "Angel" Single by Aerosmith from the album Permanent Vacation B-side "Girl Keeps Coming Apart" Released 1988 Format Vinyl, cassette, CD Recorded 1987 Genre Rock, hard rock, glam metal Length 5:08 Label Geffen Writer(s) Steven Tyler and Desmond Child Producer Bruce Fairbairn U.S. Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3

80's Movie Weekend

1981 produced a classic fact based movie of two athletes from the 1924 Olympics. One a Scottish Christian and the other an English Jew. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, won four, and featured one of the most iconic soundtracks in the last 30 years. It is "Chariots of Fire"... the trailer... Here is the video that was shot for the musician behind the famous instrumental. He was Greek electronic composer by the name of Vangelis. You May Be Rich, You May Be Poor

Whatever your case it doesn't matter to these four chaps from across the pond. I referred to them as a poor-man's U2 back a few years ago when I posted a minor hit of theirs called Rain in the Summertime. Once again, from North Wales it's The Alarm with a 1985 song called "Absolute Reality"...

Speaking Words of Wisdom

Some type of "aid" was all the rage back in the 80's with Band-Aid, Live Aid, and Farm-Aid, and we also had Ferry Aid. Don't remember it? Ferry Aid were a British-American ensemble group, brought together to record the iconic Beatles' song "Let It Be" in 1987. The single was released following the Zeebrugge Disaster, which had occurred on the 6th of March 1987 involving the capsizing of the MS Herald of Free Enterprise ferry, which killed 193 passengers and crew. All the proceeds from the single went towards a charity set up to benefit the families of those that perished. I don't really remember this nor do I remember this song. Probably because I was living my little sheltered life in the U.S. mid-west. Anyway, I really only recognize Sir Paul McCartney and Boy George in this video, but here is Ferry Aid with "Let It Be"...

R.I.P. Donna Summer

Donna Summer lost her battle with cancer yesterday, and left this earth at the age of 63. The "Queen of Disco" leaves behind a musical legacy with hits that spanned the better part of two decades in the 70's and 80's. We've posted probably two of her bigger hits of the 80's already, so here are a couple more of Donna's gems in her honor. "On the Radio" was released in 1979 and was written for the soundtrack to the film "Foxes" and included on Summer's first international compilation album "On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2." It was released as a single and became, in January 1980, her tenth top ten hit in the U.S.

Where Have All the Good Men Gone?

It's an excellent question, and The Excellent 80's is prepared to at least address it today. The Excellent 80's has never featured today's female artist before. Born Gaynor Hopkins in June of 1951, today's Welsh artist had several hits in the 70's and 80's and is known for her deep husky voice. But today's cinematic masterpiece features a fire, pretty landscapes, cowboys dressed in black, a hero cowboy in white, and an oscar worthy performance by Gaynor Hopkins, or as you might recognize her as Bonnie Tyler. Tyler goes to her knees early in the video in a move of brilliant acting because she's "Holding Out for a Hero"...

Well Excuse Me, Take A Few Minutes To Mellow Out

After three days of Tom Petty hits I felt like transitioning to some 80's rap for today. So I brought out the Kane! Big Daddy Kane to be exact. Since we went Friday and yesterday with two of Tom Petty's three rock track #1 hits off of his first solo album in 1989 entitled "Full Moon Fever," I figured we mine as well round out the trio of songs today with the iconic, laid-back, cool tune from Tom called "Free Fallin'." With a lot of L.A. area references, the video to "Free Fallin" is the best of the three and the song has been considered by many to be Tom's best...

It Was a Beautiful Day, The Sun Beat Down

Friday The Excellent 80's featured Tom Petty from his first solo album called "Full Moon Fever." He had three #1 hits on the rock tracks chart and all three songs peaked fairly high on the Billboard Hot 100 charts as well. Here is the second of those three hits. The video concept for today's song is an interesting cartoon video that I think you need to either be high or trippin' on acid to understand. Here is cartoon Tom with "Runnin' Down a Dream"...

No lyrics today. It's just the king of the 80's permed mullet coming at you today for the first time in The Excellent 80's. This is the first time I've had a chance to post about the passing of Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, aka "MCA." The Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill" was one of the first cassette rap tapes I bought. Van Halen 2012 at the BOK Center

So, if you've been tuning in here at all the past week or so you know that I took a road trip to Tulsa, OK to catch Van Halen and Kool and the Gang in concert on Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth" tour at the fabulous BOK Center on Tuesday night. Kool and the Gang opened to a sparsely populated arena, but by the end of their set had some of the drunk white dudes up dancing in the aisles. Those guys still do some nice choreography and put on a good show. It was an 11 man ensemble featuring a couple of saxophones, trumpet, trombone, bass, guitar, keys, drums, etc. You name it they had it. After their performance which started promptly at 7:30 there was a break (one break coming up!) and Van Halen took the stage to "Unchained" followed by "Running With the Devil" which got the party started. The highlights of the hour and 50 minute show for me included those first two songs, "Panama," "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," Eddie's guitar solo, and I even came out of the concert surprisingly humming "Women in Love." The band played four songs off their new album - "Tattoo," "She's the Woman," "Chinatown," and "The Trouble With Never." I was ok with "Tattoo," and I'm a big fan of "She's the Woman," but I'd preferred that they'd just stuck "Chinatown" and "The Trouble With Never" back in the Van Halen bag. The only song they didn't hit which I would have liked to hear was "And the Cradle Will Rock" (see setlist down at the bottom for the full list of songs). Otherwise, as expected Dave has a tough time hitting the high notes and even staying on track on some of the songs, but what do you expect from the 57 year old Roth? He's part vaudeville actor, part ringmaster, part lounge singer, but I give him tremendous props for the physical shape he stays in and the effort he puts forth during the concert. He let out a few vintage kicks and can still get about 75% of the way on his splits.
Eddie's solo was truly one of the highlights of the show. Doing his first tour sober, according to an interview he did recently, Eddie was truly awesome once again proving that the hand is faster than the eye... way faster. I caught myself just hoping they'd get through the first verse or two of every song so I could watch the master shred. Eddie alone was worth the money.
As for the rest of the band, Eddie's song Wolfgang was solid on bass. He doesn't have the charisma or seem to hit some of the high notes as well as Michael Anthony, but all in all Wolfie does the job and kind of stays in the back ground letting the spotlight shine on Dave and Eddie. Eddie's brother Alex has to be one of the most underrated drummers ever because his drum solo was incredible and he just continues to give Van Halen that distinctive thunder to the background of many of their great songs. Alex reminds me of a mad scientist in the back with his sunglasses on as his once perfect hair starts to unravel due to the force of his banging. All in all it was a great night hanging out with some great friends and enjoying some great music. Here's some clips from last night's show... "Hot For Teacher"... Eddie doing what Eddie does best... shredding! Even Kool and the Gang put in a solid 50 minute set... Long live Van Halen! The setlist for the show: Unchained Runnin' With the Devil She's the Woman Romeo Delight Tattoo Everybody Wants Some!! Somebody Get Me a Doctor China Town Hear About It Later Oh, Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison cover) Drum Solo You Really Got Me (The Kinks cover) The Trouble with Never Dance the Night Away I'll Wait Hot for Teacher Women In Love Girl Gone Bad Beautiful Girls Ice Cream Man (John Brim cover) Panama Guitar Solo Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love Encore: Jump

The Time Has Come to Say Fair's Fair

It was a late night jamming with Van Halen and Kool and the Gang at the BOK Center in Tulsa last night, so hopefully tomorrow I'll have a review with some pictures and or video of the concert.

For today though, The Excellent 80's travels down under for a rock band from the outback. I always thought today's video had a U2 kind of flair about it, and after some research on the never-wrong wiki page I learned that the song is a political song about giving native Australian lands back to the Pintupi, who were among the very last people to come in from the desert. I also enjoy lead singer Peter Garrett's awkward dance moves in this video. It's hard to believe Garrett is nearly 60 years old now. Here is the Aussie group Midnight Oil with "Beds Are Burning"...
