Sooner or Later You'll Feel That Momentum Kick In

I can't tell you the last time I even thought about this video or song by Billy Joel. In the video, Joel plays some sort of angel dressed in black helping a young kid named George Bailey, I mean George Young overcome some obstacles and showing him what life would look like without him in the world. As we finish up our "Billy Joel July" today don't forget your second wind, people! Hope you enjoyed our month long tribute to the 80's hits of Billy Joel. Here is "You're Only Human (Second Wind)"...

Party People, Can Ya'll Get Funky?

My apologies to all of you Afrika Bambaataa fans out there for having this 80's blog for four + years and never before featuring this funky group. Many even consider today's song as one of the top 10 or 20 rap songs of the 1980's. Born in 1957, Afrika Bambaataa is considered by many the "father of the electro funk sound." Check out the sweet dance moves in today's video and song known as "Planet Rock"...

I don't recall ever seeing today's comedy from 1985, but it doesn't mean I didn't see it and just forget about it because the reviews indicate it's a fairly forgettable film despite the stellar cast. Well, Low Dealer With Snake Eyes

You have to love it whenever a glam metal band wants to play cowboy in their video. The boys from Ratt get all dressed up and look down right scary in their western wardrobe with that hair and all that makeup they're wearing. My only complaint is that those five should have ended the video getting gunned down by the five real cowboys, but we don't get to see who even wins. I feel slightly ripped off by this video. Here is Ratt with "Wanted Man"...

80's Movie Weekend

I wasn't quite old enough to catch this R rated movie back in 1988 and I didn't sneak into it either, but it was geared probably more towards women then men so that gave it another strike in my book. It does star Lea Thompson and SNL's Victoria Jackson and features "The Diceman," Andrew Clay. That alone could make me want to rent it someday, plus there appears to be some great 80's fashion throughout the flick. Anyway, your 80's weekend movie is "Casual Sex?"... the trailer... various scenes from the movie, but I am going to start doing my crunches with emphasis like The Diceman does... Casual Sex? I Bet She Never Had a Backstreet Guy

Depending upon who you believe, today's Billy Joel song was inspired by then girlfriend, super model Elle Macpherson, or future wife super model Christie Brinkley, or inspired by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I think a combination of all three is a nice way to tidy it up. Whatever the case, that alone ought to let you know what a stud Billy Joel was back in the 80's - he went from Elle to Christie! Probably two of the hottest women of the 80's, and Billy Joel was at one time with both. Now, he's with neither, and I'm not sure or not if he'd settle again for an "Uptown Girl"...

This weekend's 80's movie flashback takes us back to a stinker from 1987. The film featuring Bangles lead singer Susanna Hoffs and was directed by her mother Tamar Hoffs. My Clothes I Quickly, I Quickly Shed

This video is awesome. Plain and simple, it's absolutely 80's awesomeness. I don't remember this song or video, but after watching it I can't believe this didn't make a bigger splash on MTV in 1985. It's a little known band called The Family with a funky Prince-inspired sound released on Prince's Paisley Park Records. The background is incredible. The dress (some sort of pajamas/robe look), and the choreography is outstanding. Check out The Family with "The Screams of Passion"...

Knee Deep in the Hoopla

I probably hated this popular 80's song as much if not more than any other popular song of the 80's that went all the way to #1. That would explain why this is the first time in 4+ years of posting that I've posted the song and video. First off the band started off as Jefferson Airplane, then they were Jefferson Starship, and then after much court wrangling they were eventually just Starship. That's confusing enough. Like I've said many times before in here, I don't discriminate just because I don't like the song or video. Anyway, if you happen to like this song or video, I hope you enjoy this stupid song and this stupid video. It's "We Built This City"...

There's One More Outfit

Today's R&B singer from Nassau, Bahammas will forever be remembered as the man that "Just Got Paid." That song is enough in my book to put you into Friday night jams legendary status. Unfortunately, that's really all Johnny Kemp will be remembered for from the 80's, but he did have one other top 40 hit. It climbed all the way up to #36 and was from the soundtrack of the motion picture "Sing" (which I never saw and don't remember at all). But I do remember this song. Here is Johnny with "Birthday Suit"...

Must Have Left My House At Eight

You can thank me later for today's song and video. With their last top 10 hit in Sweden, it's the Swedish super group ABBA from 1982 with "The Day Before You Came"... Must have left my house at eight, because I always do My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due I must have read the morning paper going into town And having gotten through the editorial, no doubt I must have frowned. I must have made my desk around a quarter after nine With letters to be read, and heaps of papers waiting to be signed I must have gone to lunch at half past twelve or so The usual place, the usual bunch And still on top of this I'm pretty sure it must have rained The day before you came. I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two And at the time I never even noticed I was blue I must have kept on dragging through the business of the day Without really knowing anything, I hid a part of me away. [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/agnetha_faltskog/the_day_before_you_came.html ] At five I must have left, there's no exception to the rule A matter of routine, I've done it ever since I finished school The train back home again Undoubtedly I must have read the evening paper then Oh yes, I'm sure my life was well within it's usual frame The day before you came. Must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so And stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on TV There's not, I think, a single episode of Dallas that I didn't see. I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then I must have read a while The latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style It's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim The day before you came. And turning out the light I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain The day before you came. What's the Matter With the Clothes I'm Wearing?

It's July and it's hot! And it's time for another month here in The Excellent 80's featuring an artist that had numerous videos and hits throughout the 80's. His name is William Martin Joel, born in May of 1949. Because of his massive number of hits, we are just featuring those from the 80's, so there won't be any 70's hits like "Piano Man," or "She's Always A Woman," or any from the 90's like "River of Dreams." Paying homage to his hits of the 80's, it's a "Billy Joel July," and we're kicking it off with a #1 hit from 1980 - "It's Still Rock & Roll to Me"...
